Mega Chess
*This is a chess concept with a wider game board, more pieces on the board. It makes for a more exciting and frenetic game. You don't need to know how to play regular chess to play this version.*
Mega Chess — Rules
The Board
Mega Chess is played on a 14×8 board (14 files: A through N, 8 ranks: 1 through 8). The board uses a checkered pattern with three selectable color themes: Navy Blue, Classic Red, and Parchment.
The Pieces (per player)
- 14 Pawns — occupy the entire second rank (rank 2 for White, rank 7 for Black)
- 4 Rooks — files A, D, L, N
- 4 Knights — files B, E, J, M
- 4 Bishops — files C, F, I, K
- 1 Queen — file G (on her own color)
- 1 King — file H
Total: 28 pieces per side, 56 total
Piece Movement
All pieces move exactly as in standard chess:
Piece | Movement |
Pawn | Forward 1 (or 2 from starting rank). Captures diagonally. Promotes on reaching the far rank. En passant applies. |
Rook | Any number of squares horizontally or vertically |
Knight | L-shape: 2 squares one direction, 1 perpendicular. Jumps over pieces. |
Bishop | Any number of squares diagonally |
Queen | Any number of squares in any direction |
King | One square in any direction. May castle with any unmoved rook. |
Castling
The king may castle with any rook that has not moved, provided:
- No pieces stand between the king and that rook
- The king is not currently in check
- The king does not pass through or end on a square attacked by an enemy piece
- Neither the king nor the rook has previously moved
To castle: select the king, then click the destination square (two squares toward the rook). The king and rook move together.
Pawn Promotion
When a pawn reaches the opposite end of the board (rank 8 for White, rank 1 for Black), it must be promoted to a Queen, Rook, Bishop, or Knight. A selection panel appears.
Check and Checkmate
- Check: The king is under attack. The player must escape check on their next move.
- Checkmate: The king is in check and no legal move can escape. That player loses.
- Stalemate: The player has no legal moves but is not in check. The game is a draw.
En Passant
If a pawn moves two squares forward and lands beside an enemy pawn, that enemy pawn may capture it as if it had moved only one square. This must be done on the immediately following turn.
Game Modes
- Local 2-Player: Two players on the same device. A dice roll determines who plays White.
- Player vs. AI: Play against the computer with three difficulty levels (Easy, Medium, Hard). Optional Deep Thinking mode for stronger play.
Clock
An optional chess clock (Off, 3, 5, 10, 15, or 30 minutes per side) can be enabled before the game. The clock can be paused/resumed during play.
